vintage camp

This lower-level shared bathroom was ready for some inspiration. The owners of this unique home have such great personalities, and share a distinct affinity for things that are interesting, creative, and unusual. Having grown up in the 70s, countless tales of being abducted by aliens while peacefully camping in the woods spread faster than a marshmallow melting over a campfire. This quirky wallpaper spoke to them immediately, and we instantly knew we had a design direction. Never folks to take themselves too seriously, the bold but simple pattern was just the right statement they were looking for. Papering just the top half or so of the wall allowed for some contrast to the natural color of the paper’s background, and bring some crispness to balance some of the textural and organic elements. The fresh, white shiplap wainscoting was a perfect choice.

This room is generously sized for a guest bathroom, and acts as something of a pass-through, connecting the laundry room to the adjacent hallway and bedrooms. The home is also octagonal; each corner’s angle is greater than 90 degrees, which presented a challenge when deciding on the vanity design. Taking a nod from the vintage “camp” feel, we incorporated a thick live edge reclaimed slab as the vanity countertop, extending wall-to-wall, and expertly mitered into the corners; this installation allows for the use of the entire span as counter surface (versus a standalone piece that - unless completely custom - would leave too much room on the sides, revealing a unsightly gap). To this we added a vintage-inspired white porcelain vessel sink, tipped in black, and a modern matte black wall-mounted faucet to bring it current.

The shower pan is tiled in 2” black matte squares; to this slightly modern but still old-school floor tile, we incorporated a softer, more natural-feeling element in the 6” wall tiles. These tiles have a bit of subtle distressing along the edges and interesting texture. The entire shower is incased in custom glass, with a handy foot rest and product niche. The 20” rainfall shower head brings a bit of luxury to this one-of-a-kind lavatory.

Behind the toilet we utilized an off-cut of the live edge to create a wider ledge for storage, to interrupt the white shiplap, and bring some of the wood to this side of the room. Finished with crisp white linens, black matte shelving and towel ladder, natural baskets, and a handmade black porcelain light fixture. A few bright green plants add a pop of color.
